Alto Atacama can be found just over a mile from the plaza of San Pedro, nestled in the Catarpe Valley of the Salt Mountain Range. The hotel’s design is inspired by local village architecture, and the emphasis on environmental sustainability and connection with the local culture has resulted in the creation of a unique hotel which blends effortlessly into the natural surroundings, appearing as if to rise out of the terracotta ridge behind it. Responsible for the design of the hotel is Paris-trained landscape designer and botanist Veronica Poblete, an ex-Harvard lecturer and creator of Andescape. She developed a concept of using local flora and fauna and ancient agricultural techniques to build an environment of true authenticity. The wonderful outdoor lounge spaces, sweeping views and tranquillity and silence of Alto Atacama makes it one of the most unforgettable spots from which to experience the Atacama desert. The hotel encourages its guests to get off the beaten track, interact with the local indigenous culture and explore the desert’s varied and eerily beautiful landscapes by foot or bike. Seek expert advice and knowledge from the hotel’s staff, more than half of which is indigenous, and revel in their personal stories and histories which enrich guests’ experience and understanding of the region. Excellently located, Alto Atacama offers 30 adventurous excursions, including geysers, hot springs, volcano climbs, mountain biking through desert canyons, and exploring ancient Incan ruins and petroglyphs, all led by highly trained local guides.
