WHEN TO GO
A narrow strip between the Andes and the Pacific Ocean, almost 4000km in length and just 180km in average width, Chile is a land of diversity and contrasts. It offers fantastic variety of landscapes and climates, from the most arid desert in the world to snow-capped glaciers. Between these extremes there is a kaleidoscope of vistas: lush vineyards, steaming rainforest, dramatic fjords and desolate Patagonian plains.
- The barren Atacama Desert, the driest desert in the world
- The altiplano wilderness in the far north with its snow-capped volcanoes, salt lakes and wildlife
- Parque Nacional Torres del Paine with the soaring granite pillars of Torres del Paine
- The modern and cultural centre of Santiago
- Valparaiso, a UNESCO Heritage site, its steep streets offering terrific views of the Pacific Ocean
For wine aficionados, there are 10 vineyard routes that highlight the history of Chilean wine and the art of the wine-making process. They all offer tastings complemented by the local cuisine, which is a treat in its own right. Every area of Chile has its own culinary identity, influenced by the customs of the native people.
Our suggested Chile itineraries are below but we can tailor any of them to create your perfect trip. Popular extensions include Patagonia, Chilean Lake District and High Altitude Detox.
