Salt Flats and Desert Safari

Journey through the Salar de Uyuni and the Bolivian desert, one of the most remote and awe-inspiring areas in South America.

HighlivesPrice: From £2100 per person

This 6-day tour takes you on an adventure across the rugged, lunar-like landscapes of south-west Bolivia. Covering an area the size of Switzerland, across unforgiving roads and beyond, the journey is taken in a large 4x4 jeep with optional walks and excursions.

The first part of the journey will traverse the bleach-white expanse of the vast Uyuni Salt Flats, with relief from the glare provided by a stop on a cactus-filled island. As you continue to travel you will witness spectacular rock and cave formations, desert landscapes where colours melt into one another like a radioactive Dali painting and flamingoes flying over volcanic lagoons where the minerals have coloured the waters blue, green and red. Dodge the steamy geysers and bathe away jeep stiffness in bubbling hot springs. Meet with herders and their flocks of llama, glimpse the wild vicuna - a smaller, prettier and shyer cousin to the llama - or even one of the rare rabbit-like viscachas, an Andean fox or a condor soaring in the distance.

The Uyuni Salt Flats is one of the most remote areas of Bolivia, and accommodation options are therefore scarce and very basic. HighLives has partnered with the best providers in the region to ensure your lodgings are the most comfortable on offer. While we can’t promise 5-star luxury, we can guarantee an anxiety-free trip, with all meals, lodging and transportation taken care of.
