Journey along the Lares Trail to Machu Picchu, through the Urubamba Valley in Peru’s “Sacred Valley of the Incas”.
This tour features exclusive accommodation in comfortable lodges. The lodges serve as deluxe bases for day hikes, designed for a variety of hiking levels and abilities, as well as daily alternatives to explore Lares and the Sacred Valley whilst travelling from lodge to lodge.
Five or seven-day fixed departures leave from the city of Cusco, accompanied by an expert guide for the entire journey. The trip ends with a guided visit of Machu Picchu and a climb of the adjacent Huayna Picchu peak for a dramatic view of the Inca citadel.
About the Lares Trail
The Lares Trail, an alternative to the much more frequently travelled Inca Trail, features many cultural and natural highlights including traditional weavers in colourful dress, roving herds of alpacas and llamas, and a panorama of waterfalls, snow peaks, and glacial lakes.
An extensive network of trails throughout the Lares and the Sacred Valley lead to traditional Andean highland communities, where guests can meet local communities and get a glimpse of the distant past. It includes visits to spectacular Inca archaeological sites including the fortress of Pisac, Huchuy Cosco and the town of Ollantaytambo, where rebel Inca leader Manco Inca defeated the Spanish in battle.
More challenging trails traverse remote passes with views of Andean peaks, with the occasional condor soaring above.
After a day of hiking or exploring, travellers return to the lodges where they can enjoy the comfort of spacious rooms with hot showers, gourmet dining, lounging by the fireplace and recollecting the day’s adventures, and perhaps even a jacuzzi and a massage.
The lodges are designed to blend into the existing landscape and are built of local materials — stone, adobe, wood, and straw — that reflect the region’s traditional construction.
