HighLives has partnered with a specialist mountain biking provider that has many years of experience as the safest and most trusted operator in the region. We offer excellent routes for riders with a limited experience of mountain biking to advanced riders looking for the most challenging single-track.

THE WORLD'S MOST DANGEROUS ROAD

A spectacular descent of more than 3,600m from a snow-capped mountain pass to near-tropical jungle in just 60 miles (64km) and around 4-5 hours riding time.

The road dubbed the most dangerous on the planet by the Inter-American Development Bank in 1995 was, until a few years back, the only route from La Paz into the semi-tropical Yungas region. Dozens of lives were lost every year as lorries, trucks and buses veered off the narrow ledge into the jungle far below.

The route is much quieter since a by-pass was built in 2006 but its dangers are still very real as bikers negotiate this gravel and dirt track often little more than 3 metres wide. Experience a thrill like no other as you whizz along with a sheer cliff one on side and a perilous 600-metre drop plunging away on the other.

After the ride, relax at a peaceful animal refuge with a freshly-cooked meal and a cold beer in the company of rescued monkeys, parrots and snakes. Return by minibus the same day (via the by-pass!). Or choose to stay in one of the cabins at the refuge and enjoy the wildlife, swimming pool and jungle surroundings. We can also arrange transfers to the nearby hilltop village of Coroico, a popular warm-weather weekend retreat for wealthy Bolivians with several comfortable hotel and dining options.

This ride is suitable for confident beginners to experts of average fitness and above looking for a long, world-class, downhill mountain bike ride.

The Ghost Ride

Another exciting 1-day downhill ride outside of La Paz, starting from a height of almost 5,000 metres alongside a glacier at a misty mountain pass. This off-road ride calls for a bit more experience as the route follows barely-used tracks, scree slopes and slippery streams to descend to a haunted castle perched on a lonely road halfway to the jungle at 1,900 metres.

The track accommodates rides of differing abilities but is more technical than the Death Road, with an optional single-track section and fast rocky road segments as you hurtle down the valley passing the odd tiny hamlet and an abandoned church.

At the end of the ride,  and enjoy a buffet meal after a hot shower at the castle. You can even choose to stay the night- if you dare- before returning by minibus to La Paz.

Other options

More challenging rides of 1-3 days are offered for intermediate riders with singletrack experience. These rides are based out of La Paz, have world-class tracks, are mostly downhill and are technical. If you’re a serious mountain biker or just want a good challenge, these might be for you.

Two to three-day trips are also available in the area, as well as rides of one-week or more. These trips are all-inclusive, with meals and lodging provided.
