Travel by private 4X4 to the Atacama Desert, Bolivian Uyuni salt flats and on through a wildly remote region of surreal rock formations, bubbling geysers and garishly-coloured lakes where thousands of flamingos make their home against the backdrop of snow-capped volcanoes.

Then, on to Chile in the footsteps of Spanish conquistadors via a lesser-known route across the national parks that straddle the border. A gentle, if breathless, trek in the shadow of Bolivia’s highest mountain proves the slightly gentler landscape it is no less magnificent. Journey through the reserves dotted with simple Aymara villages, alpaca herders, inca ruins and irrigation channels and lonely adobe churches dating back to the 17th Century. Then back down to Earth along a desert coastline flanked by mysterious giant geoglyphs- shapes in the ground believed to have been made by pre-Incan people.

Visit ghostly mining towns that once thrived on the extraction of nitrates used in fertiliser and gunpower but were slowly abandoned early in the 20th Century when synthetic substitutes were developed. Finally, the chance to relax and rest up in comfort on the Pacific beaches of modern Iquique.
